St.
Pappins is the sixth and latest addition to The Silverstream Healthcare
Group. The brief, as in the case of all the Silverstream Healthcare
nursing homes on which the Practice has worked, is to create a cheerful,
warm, stylish, homely atmosphere with comfortable furniture suited
to the needs of residents, who have varying degrees of dependency.
In this case, as an added challenge, though an exciting one, St.
Pappins Church, on the site of which the new nursing home was built,
was incorporated into the new scheme. One third of the interior
of the church retains full ceiling height, the reception is located
here, with plenty of comfortable chairs for residents and their
visitors to relax, the remainder comprises a dining room, oratory
and quiet room on the ground floor, with a second dining room and
more group seating on the mezzanine above. Bedrooms, dayrooms and
kitchen are contained in the two storey building to the rear of
the church.
It
was most important that the church area be made as inviting as possible.
Drawing from a rich palette of colour: terracotta, butter yellow
and green; the ceiling was painted a rich terracotta, both for warmth
and to give the visual effect of lowering the ceiling, The walls
were painted yellow, to give the effect of sunshine and to open
out the space, thus creating an effect where the proportions of
the church appear to change to a more domestic and less grand scale.
The light green carpet with the other two colours incorporated into
the pattern, gives a feeling of restfulness.
Since
framed prints would not have been able to compete with scale of
the walls, four large banners were designed and commissioned, on
the theme of the four seasons, and hung between the windows.
Two
of the photographs show a corner of one of the day rooms and a bedroom
in the new building.
